CA-YNP Yosemite National Park, Yosemite Fire Update 12

Yosemite Fire Update #12, August 13, 2015

Air Quality in the park is being affected by numerous fires throughout California. For more information refer to the web sites listed below. Currently no roads are closed within the park.

All visitors are urged to be diligent in any use of fire, including smoking. And be sure all fires are out!
As with all fires, staff and visitor safety is of paramount importance. Each fire, regardless of size, is assessed for the appropriate course of action.

The photo shows Wawona Engine 32 crew members installing a Portable Remote Automatic Weather Station (P-RAWS), on a granite ridge, northwest of the lightning caused Indian Canyon Fire. The station measures relative humidity, temperature, precipitation and other critical weather data for firefighters. In the background is light smoke, Half Dome and other peaks within Yosemite.

Active Wildland Fires:
Upper (37 45.534 x 119 35.983 – Mariposa Co., August 10). This fire was discovered by hikers at approximately 3:30PM, August 10. It is now out and in patrol status. Quick action by the Yosemite Helitack, with supporting water bucket drops, and fire crews held the fire to 3.85 acres. The fire was determined to be human caused and is under investigation. Smoke from the fire may continue to affect air quality in the morning hours. All park trail closures associated with the Upper Falls fire were lifted at 6:00 PM 8/13.

Badger (37 40.697 x 119 39.316 – Mariposa Co., August 10). This fire was discovered by Helicopter 551 in the area of Summit Meadows near Glacier Point Road. Wawona Engine 32 responded and suppressed the 0.01acre fire. It is in patrol status.

Lightning caused fires being monitored and managed for multiple objectives:
Cathedral (37 51.078 x 119 25.120 – Tuolumne Co., 9400’El., 8/2). This is near the John Muir Trail to Cathedral Lakes. The perimeter is actively smoldering and creeping through lodgepole pine needles and logs and has good potential to grow until it hits natural barriers. The fire is 6.0 acres in size and is being monitored.

Middle (37 51.538 x 119 41.194 - Tuolumne Co., 8043’El., 7/27). It is west of White Wolf and south of the Middle Tuolumne River. It is at 2.5 acres, and smoke may be visible from Tioga Road. It continues to smolder and creep through down logs, pine needles and other vegetation. It is in a red fir and lodgepole pine forest.

Dark (37 50.575 x 119 37.153 – Mariposa Co.,8200’ el., 7/ 9). This fire is along the Yosemite Creek Campground Road and smoke is periodically visible from both the campground and Tioga roads. Fire crews secured the edges of the fire by burning along the most active perimeter. That operation is complete. It is at 41.5 acres, and continues to creep and smolder through red fir duff and needles within the interior of the fire. The Lukens trail is now re-opened. Fire crews will be parked and working Yosemite Creek Campground Road. For firefighter and visitor safety, drivers are urged to use caution while driving in the area of parked fire equipment.

White Cascade (37 54.926 x 119 23.780 - Tuolumne Co, at 9000’ el., 7/3). This remote fire is east of Glen Aulin High Sierra camp, east of Conness Creek, and west of Tuolumne Meadows, and is at 0.68 acres. This high elevation fire, in a lodge pole pine forest, has a low spread potential. The fire is not near any trails. Smoke may be visible in Tuolumne Meadows.

Quartzite (37 43.871 x 119 25.200 - Mariposa Co., 8387’ el., 7/27). It is approximately 0.5 miles south of Merced Lake, mid-slope and on a north aspect. It is smoldering in mountain hemlock, western white pine and lodgepole pine. This fire is contained to natural barriers.

Stubblefield (38 02.743 x 119 36.625 – Tuolumne Co., 7659’ el., 8/3). This fire is in Stubblefield Canyon and west of the Pacific Crest Trail and at the northeast section of the Park; it is very remote. It is most likely a lightning strike holdover. Currently, it is 2-3 acres in size, in a red fir and Jeffrey Pine forested area, with other sparse vegetation.

Oakland: Trial For Teen Charged with Shooting Off-duty Medic Quinn Boyer #CAEMS #CALaw #CACrime

Trial of Calif. medic killed in carjacking begins

A teenager is charged with shooting off-duty medic Quinn Boyer as he was stopped in his car sending a text message about medical equipment.

Defense attorney Ernie Castillo said Monday that Burton was pressured by police into making a false confession to Boyer's death and that eyewitness accounts show the real shooter was the crime spree ringleader.

By Malaika Fraley
Contra Costa Times
OAKLAND, Calif. — The widow of slain Santa Clara County paramedic Quinn Boyer was the first to testify at the trial for two teens charged with murdering the 34-year-old Oakland native whose friends and family, including paramedics in uniform, filled the Oakland courtroom.

"He never felt like a boyfriend, he never felt like my husband -- he felt like my best friend," said Elizabeth Huerta Boyer, who was approaching her marriage anniversary and trying to start a family with Boyer when he was killed. "It's like not having a limb, and it's a nightmare. It's a literal nightmare."

Christian Burton, 18, and David McNeal, 17 -- who were 16 and 15, respectively, at the time of the shooting -- are being prosecuted as adults for Boyer's killing. The incident occurred, prosecutor Glenn Kim said, when they and four other teens, the youngest 14, skipped school April 2, 2013, and embarked on a two-day crime spree. Burton is alleged to have fatally shot Boyer, and McNeal is accused of using the same gun to shoot and wound a 13-year-old Oakland boy during a robbery the following day.

Defense attorney Ernie Castillo said Monday that Burton was pressured by police into making a false confession to Boyer's death and that eyewitness accounts show the real shooter was the crime spree ringleader.

"I'm going to spend a tremendous amount of time proving to you that the shooter in this case was Nazhee Flowers," Castillo said.

Flowers, 18, was convicted in adult court for carjacking in connection with the case and recently was sentenced to 15 years in prison. Besides the defendants themselves, he is the only teen present that day who won't be taking the witness stand at the current trial.

Damani Watts, Maurice Senegal and Rodkei Royal, who were each convicted of first-degree murder in juvenile court and are serving out their sentences, are expected to take the witness stand, Kim said.

Kim opened the trial by showing a photo of a beaming Boyer at his April 2012 wedding. The Oakland native had spent the morning taking his father to a pre-op medical appointment in Palo Alto and was planning on spending time later with his little brother through the Big Brothers Big Sisters program. That photo was replaced by police video of Boyer slumped over his steering wheel with blood gushing from his head, images that sent many of his friends and family running from the courtroom in tears.

Boyer was not far from his father's Oakland hills home when he pulled over on Keller Avenue around noon to send a text message about equipment he and his paramedic partner needed.

The teens spotted him as they were looking for their next carjacking victim, feeling cramped with the six of them in the Dodge Intrepid some of them had carjacked from a retired Oakland man at High Street and Congress Avenue an hour earlier, Kim said.

An Oakland woman will testify she was approaching the stop sign at Keller Avenue and Hansom Drive when she saw the Intrepid stop next to Boyer's car. Kim said Flowers and Burton both got out, and Burton fired at Boyer. Castillo said the witness saw only Flowers.

Burton is charged with Boyer's murder only, while McNeal is charged with numerous felonies in connection with the two-day spree. McNeal's attorney, David Bryden, didn't mention those alleged crimes during his opening statement and simply said that McNeal played no part in Boyer's death.

Some of the teens, including McNeal, allegedly carjacked another man that afternoon near an East Oakland elementary school as children were present, and at least two of the teens led Oakland police and an Alameda County sheriff's deputy on a high-speed chase.

That chase led witnesses, including one of the officers, to wrongly identify two other teenagers as being responsible for the second carjacking. But it was one of those wrongly accused boys who gave Oakland police their big break in the Boyer murder case: He was able to name Royal as one of the teens on surveillance video from in and outside a market before the first carjacking, Kim said.

Boyer was declared brain-dead April 4, 2013. Roger Boyer testified Monday that he and his daughter-in-law didn't want to take him off life support, but they knew that Quinn Boyer wished that his organs be donated to people in need in case of such a tragedy.

Testimony continues Tuesday in the court of Judge C. Don Clay.

Air Tanker News: New Supertanker to be the fastest, longest-range, and most effective aerial firefighting platform in the world.

Global SuperTanker Services, LLC, a subsidiary of Cyterna Air LLC, is pleased to announce completion of a definitive agreement to convert and operate Boeing 747-400 aircraft to be the fastest, longest-range, and most effective aerial firefighting platform in the world.

Cyterna Air, LLC is a portfolio company of an investment fund managed by private equity firm Alterna Capital Partners.

Jim Wheeler, President and CEO of Global SuperTanker Services has re-assembled core members of the former Evergreen Supertanker project team to install the pressurized tank system previously proven in a 747-100 with the significantly higher-performance and lower operating cost modern B747-400BCF (Boeing Converted Freighter).

The aircraft has a number of unique capabilities, including the ability to stand by on the ground fully loaded, deliver a variety of firefighting agents, respond rapidly over long distances, loiter over fire areas for extended periods, segment drops and land fully or partially loaded to avoid wasting firefighting agents.

The SuperTanker operates from most designated VLAT bases staying close to the fire location saving time and fuel.

Wheeler commented, “The current worsening trends in wildfires globally demand more capable response tools. The Boeing 747-400 represents a modern, strong, high performance platform capable of flying more than 4000 nautical miles at a cruise speed of 565 miles per hour, at pressurized altitudes, fully loaded, then directly deploying nearly 20,000 gallons of a range of liquids including retardant, water, gel and foaming agents. We believe the Global SuperTanker will be a “force multiplier” for the men and women who are on the front line of controlling wildfires".

Harry Toll, Managing Partner of Alterna Capital commented, “Alterna invests capital to build valuable capabilities in vital industries. We believe strongly that the SuperTanker will add a new dimension to protecting forests, homes and lives through a powerful combination of speed, capacity and precision. In the US and many countries around the world there is an effort to deploy a ‘new generation’ of aerial tankers. We are working to deliver this and other aircraft to meet that need.”

****REMINDER**** Every fire has the ability to be catastrophic. The wildland fire management environment has profoundly changed. Growing numbers of communities, across the nation, are experiencing longer fire seasons; more frequent, bigger, and more severe, fires are a real threat. Be careful with all campfires and equipment.
