LAFD: South L.A. structure fire badly burns woman; rescuers find her in bathtub

The woman was critically injured and suffered burns to more than 50 percent of her body Thursday during a residential structure fire which was reported at 7:24 p.m. Thursday in a one-story house in the 600 block of West 76th Street in South Los Angeles, California.

Two police officers also suffered minor burns in the fire, according to a news report from the Los Angeles Times.
When firefighters arrived, they found a teenage boy had escaped through a window with the help of the officers. The boy told authorities his mother was inside and that she had turned back toward the flames for some reason, Rescuers found the 42-year-old woman moments later in her tub and took her to California Hospital Medical Center. The injured officers were taken to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center.
It took 33 firefighters 16 minutes to extinguish the firesaid Eric Scott, a spokesman with the Los Angeles Fire Department. . The cause was under investigation, Scott said.

How fires get their names

Every year in California thousands of wildfires start throughout the state. In most cases, the dispatch center sending the initial resources to a wildland fire will designate a name for the fire, but the first on scene engine or fire official can also name the incident. Fires are usually named for the area in which they start – a geographical location, local landmark, street, lake, mountain, peak, etc. Quickly naming the fire provides responding fire resources with an additional locater, and allows fire officials to track and prioritize incidents by name. For example during the Southern California Fire Siege of 2003, the largest wildland fire in California history, the Cedar Fire in San Diego County, was named after the Cedar Creek Falls area where it started. The destructive Old Fire, which burned during the same time period in San Bernardino County, was named after the road along which it started - Old Waterman Canyon Road.
