LTBMU: Lake Tahoe prescribed fire operations resume

Prescribed Fire operations resume on West Shore, begin on North Shore

U.S. Forest Service fuels management crews are scheduled to resume prescribed fire operations in the Rubicon Bay area beginning tomorrow, Wednesday, August 17, 2011.
In addition, operations are scheduled to begin on the North Shore of Lake Tahoe near National Avenue and Highway 267.

In both areas, crews expect to conduct operations on three to five acres and operations are expected to continue through the week. All prescribed fire operations are dependent on weather and available staffing.

Residents and visitors can expect to see smoke from these prescribed fire project areas and smoke may be visible on Highway 89 on the West Shore and Highway 267 on the North Shore.

Smoke: Smoke management is part of every prescribed fire burn plan, managers expect good dispersion of smoke based on predicted weather and efforts taken to reduce actual or potential smoke impacts on community areas.

This and other prescribed fire projects are designed to reduce wildfire risks to communities and critical resources.
State and local fire management agencies may also be conducting prescribed fire work during this period.

How fires get their names

Every year in California thousands of wildfires start throughout the state. In most cases, the dispatch center sending the initial resources to a wildland fire will designate a name for the fire, but the first on scene engine or fire official can also name the incident. Fires are usually named for the area in which they start – a geographical location, local landmark, street, lake, mountain, peak, etc. Quickly naming the fire provides responding fire resources with an additional locater, and allows fire officials to track and prioritize incidents by name. For example during the Southern California Fire Siege of 2003, the largest wildland fire in California history, the Cedar Fire in San Diego County, was named after the Cedar Creek Falls area where it started. The destructive Old Fire, which burned during the same time period in San Bernardino County, was named after the road along which it started - Old Waterman Canyon Road.
