LA County: Burn Area Evacuations for possible mud slides

LOS ANGELES —  Two back to back storms headed for Southern California has officials activating Mud & debris flow plans including precautionary evacuations in probable mudslide areas below the Station Fire burn areas.

Who: Residents of 200 homes will be asked to evacuate the foothills north of Los Angeles.
When: Sheriff's officials will begin the evacuations at noon Friday, ahead of the storm expected to arrive in the evening.
Where:  Evacuations will occur in La Crescenta and La Canada Flintridge, foothill communities burned last year in the massive Station fire.
What: County Public Works officials are expected to close all Los Angeles County roads in the burn areas.
Why: Rainfall totals through Saturday are expected to range between a quarter and three-quarters of an inch. But forecasters say thunderstorms could bring downpours up to 1 1/2 inches in burn areas creating the potential for damaging mud & debris flows.

****REMINDER**** Every fire has the ability to be catastrophic. The wildland fire management environment has profoundly changed. Growing numbers of communities, across the nation, are experiencing longer fire seasons; more frequent, bigger, and more severe, fires are a real threat. Be careful with all campfires and equipment.

"I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts, and beer." --Abraham Lincoln
