GACC -07-05-09 1030 - News and Notes: California Coordination

The Susie Complex on the Six Rivers NF has been contained.

The Backbone Incident, formerly the LT 17 Incident has been separated from the Susie Complex and will be managed as a new incident - it is reported at 300 acres and 15 percent containment, a type 3 organization has taken command.

The Trinity Incident on the Shasta Trinity NF is reported at 130 acres and 50 percent containment.

High Risk Days have been issued for PSA's NC06 and NC08 for today and Monday afternoon winds of 15-30 mph with localized higher gusts.

OSCC -07-05-09 1030 - News and Notes:

Grouse CA-YNP-001510, Central Sierra CIIMT Team (Johnson IC) is in command of this incident. Fire has consumed 2,300 acres of fuel model old burn - (Steamboat Fire 1990 Fuel model 5) 8 Closed Timber Litter. This fire is 50 percent contained and is located 3 miles south of Yosemite Valley along the Glacier Point Road. 358 Total personnel assigned.

Harden CA-YNP-001659 Fire is 1,594 acres and is 75 percent contained Fuels/Materials Involved: 8 Closed Timber Litter. This fire is located in an old burn (Ackerson Complex) mixed with mixed conifer and red fir. Fire reached 90+ % of anticipated maximum acreage. 136 Total personnel assigned. Shotgun Fire CA-SQF-002025, Incident is being managed by a Type 3 organization. (IC Gibbs) Incident is 615 acres and is 5% MMA 89 Total personnel assigned

How fires get their names

Every year in California thousands of wildfires start throughout the state. In most cases, the dispatch center sending the initial resources to a wildland fire will designate a name for the fire, but the first on scene engine or fire official can also name the incident. Fires are usually named for the area in which they start – a geographical location, local landmark, street, lake, mountain, peak, etc. Quickly naming the fire provides responding fire resources with an additional locater, and allows fire officials to track and prioritize incidents by name. For example during the Southern California Fire Siege of 2003, the largest wildland fire in California history, the Cedar Fire in San Diego County, was named after the Cedar Creek Falls area where it started. The destructive Old Fire, which burned during the same time period in San Bernardino County, was named after the road along which it started - Old Waterman Canyon Road.
