South Ops - OSCC 1600hrs - San Bernardino Forest experienced scattered thunder showers with lightning. There were 12 fires for approximately 165 acres the largest McKinley Incident was 150 acres. Fire was above the city of Highland near Hwy 330. Cleveland NF also experienced a number of strikes that resulted in 1 fire Pinos and was approximately ½ acre contained. The Sequoia NF also experienced some thunder showers and lightning.

China Complex CA-SQF-001724 in Kern County near Breckenridge area. Fire is 36 acres and is 10% contained with moderate consumption of fuels a rate of spread. Suppression resources had trouble making access into the area due to steep inaccessible rugged terrain.

North Ops - ONCC 1730hrs - There where 50 new lightning fires today for 10 acres.
0930hrs - Low pressure off the Central CA coast will continue to drift slowly to the southeast through the end of the week. The North Ops area will be mostly cloudy, cool and humid during this time, with showers and thunderstorms possible over much of the area, including valley locations. Some lingering showers and isolated thunderstorms are possible over the weekend as the low weakens over the southern end of the state. Early next week a gradual warming a drying trend will begin, but no strong northerly or easterly winds are expected.

How fires get their names

Every year in California thousands of wildfires start throughout the state. In most cases, the dispatch center sending the initial resources to a wildland fire will designate a name for the fire, but the first on scene engine or fire official can also name the incident. Fires are usually named for the area in which they start – a geographical location, local landmark, street, lake, mountain, peak, etc. Quickly naming the fire provides responding fire resources with an additional locater, and allows fire officials to track and prioritize incidents by name. For example during the Southern California Fire Siege of 2003, the largest wildland fire in California history, the Cedar Fire in San Diego County, was named after the Cedar Creek Falls area where it started. The destructive Old Fire, which burned during the same time period in San Bernardino County, was named after the road along which it started - Old Waterman Canyon Road.
