Diablo Canyon Power Plant: Fire Alarm in #1 containment building

PG&E reports an "unusual event" occurred last night at Diablo Canyon Power Plant after a false fire alarm in the plant's Unit 1 containment building.

AVILA BEACH, Calif.

Diablo Canyon Power Plant (DCPP) declared an unusual event at 1:22 a.m. today after a false fire alarm in the plant's Unit 1 containment building. This incident did not pose any threat to public health or safety.

The on-site DCPP Fire Department responded and confirmed that conditions were normal. The event is under investigation to determine and correct the specific cause of the false fire alarm. Operators terminated the unusual event at 3:06 a.m.

Current Nuclear Regulatory Commission-approved (NRC) Emergency Action Levels require a notification of unusual event if a fire alarm is not validated within 15 minutes of being activated. An unusual event is the lowest of four emergency classifications.

DCPP is a nuclear power plant owned and operated by Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E). Its two units together produce approximately 2,300 net megawatts of electricity, about 10 percent of all electricity generated in California and enough to meet the needs of over three million homes in central and northern California.

****REMINDER**** Every fire has the ability to be catastrophic. The wildland fire management environment has profoundly changed. Growing numbers of communities, across the nation, are experiencing longer fire seasons; more frequent, bigger, and more severe, fires are a real threat. Be careful with all campfires and equipment.

"I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts, and beer." --Abraham Lincoln
