Tulare County: Possible new fire station south of Visalia

Tulare County Board of Supervisors weighs building new fire station south of Visalia

According to a proposal before the Tulare County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday, the Tulare County Fire Department is asking for money to move Fire Station 1, now at Lovers Lane and Walnut Avenue, 3 miles south to Avenue 256 and Lovers Lane (Road 140).

The total project is estimated to cost about $1.8 million.

The Lovers Lane/Walnut location was the Tulare County headquarters for CAL FIRE when it had the contract to provide firefighting services for unincorporated Tulare County. The Visalia Fire Department's Station 56 is currently located there.

Brian Summers, the county’s senior capital projects manager, said the new location will cut response times for the fire department.

“This is more central to the station’s response area,” he said.

A new fire station for the department has been in the works for two years. The money has already been budgeted and, if the Board of Supervisors approves the plan Tuesday, construction may start as soon as this fall. The money will come out of the capital projects fund.

The facility would take about 4-6 months to complete, Summers said.

Eventually the county wants to move the county fire department’s headquarters from the space it leases in the Farmersville Government Building out to the new facility.

“That’s part of the long- term plan,” he said.

****REMINDER**** Every fire has the ability to be catastrophic. The wildland fire management environment has profoundly changed. Growing numbers of communities, across the nation, are experiencing longer fire seasons; more frequent, bigger, and more severe, fires are a real threat. Be careful with all campfires and equipment.

"I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts, and beer." --Abraham Lincoln
