San Jose - Aircraft down - Mt. Hamilton - 2 dead

Update: Two men from the Sacramento area have been identified as the victims

The Santa Clara County Coroner's Office today identified David Hartley, 53, and John Bergsma III, 49, both of Wilton, located about 24 miles southeast of Sacramento.

Santa Clara County search crews found the aircraft early Sunday about five miles east of Lick Observatory in rugged territory, according to sheriff's Sgt. Don Morrissey.

SAN JOSE, Calif. — A federal aviation official says a small plane has crashed in the San Jose area, killing both people on board.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor said Sunday the single-engine Champion Citabria crashed Saturday for unknown reasons at the 400-foot level of Mt. Hamilton.

The names of the dead were not released.

Gregor says the plane left Watsonville around 9:30 Saturday morning and was headed to a private airstrip in Alta Mesa. Friends and relatives of the victims reported the plane missing later that afternoon after it failed to arrive.

Cause: The crash remains under investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board.

The FAA reported that the sports and utility aircraft, a Champion Citabria, had left Watsonville on Saturday morning. It wasn't clear exactly when the airplane crashed.

****REMINDER**** Every fire has the ability to be catastrophic. The wildland fire management environment has profoundly changed. Growing numbers of communities, across the nation, are experiencing longer fire seasons; more frequent, bigger, and more severe, fires are a real threat. Be careful with all campfires and equipment.

"I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts, and beer." --Abraham Lincoln
