Cal Fire: It's time to clear vegetation around home

The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, more popularly known as Cal Fire, is urging residents to create a 100-foot zone of defensible space around their homes before temperatures and the fire risk heat up.

Here are some Cal Fire tips that can help homes survive wildfires:

  • Remove all flammable vegetation within 30 feet of all structures.
  • In an additional 70 feet, space trees and plants away from one another.
  • Clear all needles and leaves from roofs, eaves and rain gutters.
  • Trim branches 6 feet from the ground.
  • Use trimming, mowing and power equipment before 10 a.m. and after 6 p.m., not during the heat of the day and not on extremely dry and windy days.
  • Landscape with fire-resistant plants.
  • Use fire-ignition-resistant building materials.

****REMINDER**** Every fire has the ability to be catastrophic. The wildland fire management environment has profoundly changed. Growing numbers of communities, across the nation, are experiencing longer fire seasons; more frequent, bigger, and more severe, fires are a real threat. Be careful with all campfires and equipment.

"I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts, and beer." --Abraham Lincoln
