Arrest made in San Diego canyon WUI wildfire

High School student was arrested for starting San Diego canyon wildfire

SAN DIEGO - A 15-year-old High School student has been arrested for arson after allegedly starting a wildfire in a canyon that caused the evacuation of a dozen homes in San Diego.

No homes were lost or damaged and no injuries were reported.

Fire-Rescue Department spokesman Maurice Luque stated that a Morse High School student was arrested Friday and the young man was turned over to juvenile authorities after he admitted starting the fire. Another 15-year-old was detained and later released to his parents.

The fire started shortly after 2 p.m. in the city's Skyline area. Several streets were closed, and students at Boone Elementary School were briefly ordered to stay in class.

****REMINDER**** Every fire has the ability to be catastrophic. The wildland fire management environment has profoundly changed. Growing numbers of communities, across the nation, are experiencing longer fire seasons; more frequent, bigger, and more severe, fires are a real threat. Be careful with all campfires and equipment.

"I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts, and beer." --Abraham Lincoln
