~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Current Situation: The fire is located approximately four miles southeast of Seiad Valley. Fire behavior was minimal during the night and was limited to creeping and smoldering of interior islands of unburned material within the fire perimeter. Firefighters expect no additional fire growth. Fire suppression repair of indirect dozer lines and roadways on all divisions of the fire have been completed. Fire crews made significant progress with mop up operations along the fire perimeter.
Today's Objectives: Fire crews will continue mop-up operations along the northern perimeter of the fire - the south side of State Highway 96, and back-haul fire suppression equipment on all divisions of the fire.
Area Closures: The Klamath National Forest issued an emergency closure order (no. 08-05-674) for Walker Creek Road (Forest Road 46N64) for the section within the Slinkard Fire area. A current forest closure map and description may be found at: www.fs.fed.us/r5/klamath/conditions/.
Evacuations: There are no evacuation orders at this time.
Remarks: State Highway 96 is currently open, however, piloted traffic controls remain in effect for public safety due to rolling material from the steep terrain coming down to the highway. For up to the minute road information call Caltrans at (800) 427-7623 or www.dot.ca.gov/hq/roadinfo/.
This will be the final fire update for the Slinkard fire from Northern California Interagency Incident Management (NorCal) Team II. NorCal II will transition with the Boise National Incident Management Organization (NIMO) who will manage all the current fires for the Klamath National Forest. NorCal Team II would like to thank the community of Seiad Valley for a wonderful Seiad Day celebration.
Additional Information: A recorded line for Klamath National Forest fire information is available at (530) 841-4451, or additional information online at www.fs.fed.us/r5/klamath. Additional fire information, maps, and photos are available online at http://www.inciweb.org/.
****REMINDER**** Every fire has the ability to be catastrophic. The wildland fire management environment has profoundly changed. Growing numbers of communities, across the nation, are experiencing longer fire seasons; more frequent, bigger, and more severe, fires are a real threat. Be careful with all campfires and equipment.
"I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts, and beer." --Abraham Lincoln
