Santa Rosa Plateau - Prescribed burn - 39 acres

Prescribed burn: Santa Rosa Plateau Ecological Reserve is scheduled for Tuesday.

A prescribed burn of 39 acres at the Santa Rosa Plateau Ecological Reserve is scheduled for Tuesday, fire officials said. Firefighters plan to burn grasslands to reduce hazardous fuel loads and to improve the habitat, Calfire-Riverside Capt. Fernando Herrera said.

Agencies cooperating with Calfire-Riverside County on the prescribed fire Tuesday include the state Department of Fish and Game, and The Nature Conservancy.

Scientists from La Sierra University, UC-Riverside, and the U.S. Forest Service Fire Laboratory are supposed to do pre-burn and post-burn analysis of the project, Calfire-Riverside County officials said.

The Riverside county reserve covers about 8,300 acres and protects ecosystems that include chaparral species, oak woodlands, canyon wetlands, coastal sage scrub, bunchgrass prairie and vernal pools, according to the Santa Rosa Plateau Foundation.

Protected wildlife on the reserve include mule deer, mountain lion, badger, bobcat, western pond turtle, white-tailed kites and fairy shrimp, according to the Santa Rosa Plateau foundation.

****REMINDER**** Every fire has the ability to be catastrophic. The wildland fire management environment has profoundly changed. Growing numbers of communities, across the nation, are experiencing longer fire seasons; more frequent, bigger, and more severe, fires are a real threat. Be careful with all campfires and equipment.

"I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts, and beer." --Abraham Lincoln
