News: Longfellow Stamp Mill Damaged By Fire

Big Oak Flat, Ca -Wednesday, May 14, 2008 - 01:15 PM- The Longfellow Stamp Mill in Big Oak Flat suffered major damage during yesterday's three acre vegetation fire off Hwy 120 and Vassar Rd.

The fire was reported during the one o'clock hour and officials have not determined the cause. The Stamp Mill was considered a focal point of an effort by local service clubs to create a historic park and visitors center along the gateway to Yosemite.

There is no word yet as to whether rebuilding is possible.

****REMINDER**** Every fire has the ability to be catastrophic. The wildland fire management environment has profoundly changed. Growing numbers of communities, across the nation, are experiencing longer fire seasons; more frequent, bigger, and more severe, fires are a real threat. Be careful with all campfires and equipment.

"I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts, and beer." --Abraham Lincoln
