Refinery fire causes wholesale gasoline prices to climb

Small refinery fire causes wholesale gasoline prices to climb 6 cents - Wholesale gasoline climbed 6 cents Friday in the Los Angeles market because of the fire, West Coast refined products market traders said.

The fire broke out at about 8:33 a.m. PDT and was under control by the Torrance Fire Department in about twenty minutes.

There were no injuries and the cause of the fire is under investigation, she said.

A hydrotreater was shut at Exxon Mobil's 150,000 barrel per day Los Angeles-area refinery in Torrance, California, following a Friday morning fire, according a Torrance Fire Department official.

The rest of the refinery was operating as the fire was contained to the hydrotreater and nearly extinguished, said Capt. Steve Deuel of the Torrance Fire Department.

Is this why the air was so horrible on Friday? It was incredibly choking in the San Gabriel Valley area, but there were no EDIS alerts or anything.

Since I am in Nor Cal I do not know the answer for sure, But they were still burning(Flaring) off gases they could not process properly as of yesterday...

How fires get their names

Every year in California thousands of wildfires start throughout the state. In most cases, the dispatch center sending the initial resources to a wildland fire will designate a name for the fire, but the first on scene engine or fire official can also name the incident. Fires are usually named for the area in which they start – a geographical location, local landmark, street, lake, mountain, peak, etc. Quickly naming the fire provides responding fire resources with an additional locater, and allows fire officials to track and prioritize incidents by name. For example during the Southern California Fire Siege of 2003, the largest wildland fire in California history, the Cedar Fire in San Diego County, was named after the Cedar Creek Falls area where it started. The destructive Old Fire, which burned during the same time period in San Bernardino County, was named after the road along which it started - Old Waterman Canyon Road.
