News: Teenagers plead guilty - Angel fire in Julian

EL CAJON, Calif.—Two teenagers have pleaded guilty to setting a campfire that caused the 850-acre Angel fire in Julian.

Deputy District Attorney Gordon Paul Davis tells the San Diego Union-Tribune that 19-year-old Francisco Javier Abarca and 18-year-old Mario J.W. DeLuca entered guilty pleas Monday in El Cajon Superior Court to one misdemeanor count of letting a fire escape.

Davis says both were placed on three years' probation.

The Sept. 15 Angel Fire forced the evacuation of hundreds in Julian and destroyed a vacation home and more than a dozen other structures.

****REMINDER**** Every fire has the ability to be catastrophic. The wildland fire management environment has profoundly changed. Growing numbers of communities, across the nation, are experiencing longer fire seasons; more frequent, bigger, and more severe, fires are a real threat. Be careful with all campfires and equipment.

"I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts, and beer." --Abraham Lincoln
