CONTRA COSTA CO.: FIRE CLOSES CRESPI MIDDLE SCHOOL TODAY, TUESDAY
Juan Crespi Middle School in El Sobrante is closed today following a three-alarm fire that broke out in the school's administration building early Saturday morning, officials said.
The school will remain closed Tuesday as well, but school officials are hoping to be able to re-open it to students Wednesday, Contra Costa Unified School District spokesman Paul Ehara said today.
The fire, which broke out shortly after 5 a.m. Saturday and burned for several hours, caused an estimated $2.5 million in damages, Contra Costa County Fire Protection District Fire Investigator Robert Davis said.
While there is no official cause, Davis said this morning that all indications were that the fire was accidental.
Ehara said that the blaze damaged the administration building, which houses the school's main office, library, attendance and counseling offices, the teacher's lounge and a few classrooms.
Fire Chief Keith Richter said Saturday that about 48 firefighters responded to the blaze, which had spread to the concealed spaces in the ceiling.
Firefighters attacked the fire with chainsaws and hoses and had to tear down large portions of the ceiling to get to it.
The fire was partially contained by 6:48 a.m., according to dispatch logs, but the final engine didn't leave the school until 2:55 p.m.
The overhaul was the most difficult part, a fire dispatcher said, because all the insulation had to be removed from the building to make sure hot spots didn't re-ignite and travel unseen in the walls and ceiling.
Juan Crespi Middle School is located at located at 1121 Allview Ave. in the unincorporated Contra Costa County area of El Sobrante.

****REMINDER**** Every fire has the ability to be catastrophic. The wildland fire management environment has profoundly changed. Growing numbers of communities, across the nation, are experiencing longer fire seasons; more frequent, bigger, and more severe, fires are a real threat. Be careful with all campfires and equipment.

"I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts, and beer." --Abraham Lincoln
