Info: Applications for teen public safety camp due

CHICO -- Applications for FAST Camp, a program designed for local teenagers considering a career in public safety, are due by Wednesday.

Butte County Fire Chiefs would like to challenge Butte County teens ages 16-19 to apply to Butte County ’s second annual Fire And Safety Training Camp. All participants will become a team member who will participate in what could be described as a “day-in-the-life-of” police officer, firefighter, paramedic, and rescuer.

Males and females between 16 and 19 are encouraged to apply for the one week training course, set for June 22-27. The camp is free.

Most activities take place in Chico, with most meals and lodging provided for camp attendees at the Cal Fire Northern Region Training Center in Magalia.

Program founder Marlene Heisey, a Cal Fire battalion chief, said the camp is a hands-on experience that gives teens an idea of what a day on the job is like for police officers, firefighters and emergency medical responders.

"Our goal is to guide these young people through some of the training required to succeed in the world of public safety and, by doing so, create an environment that provides healthy challenges and mentorship opportunities for them," said Heisey.

"FAST Camp has been described as an 'Upward Bound' type program that revolves around the physical and mental training public safety professionals go through."

How fires get their names

Every year in California thousands of wildfires start throughout the state. In most cases, the dispatch center sending the initial resources to a wildland fire will designate a name for the fire, but the first on scene engine or fire official can also name the incident. Fires are usually named for the area in which they start – a geographical location, local landmark, street, lake, mountain, peak, etc. Quickly naming the fire provides responding fire resources with an additional locater, and allows fire officials to track and prioritize incidents by name. The destructive Old Fire, which burned during the same time period in San Bernardino County, was named after the road along which it started - Old Waterman Canyon Road.
