Chief Michael E. Smith - Announces retirement

Fairfield Fire Chief Michael E. Smith announced his retirement Tuesday after 30 years of service in fire service.

Chief Smith has been Fire Chief with the City of Fairfield since February 2003.

Smith will retire May 1 to begin a new chapter in his life, he said.

One of the first things he plans to do this summer is celebrate his 55th birthday and spend time participating in his hobby of drag racing.

"There are plenty of things I would like to do," Smith said. "I'm still young and healthy and I've made quite a contribution. Now it's time to open up and do something else."

****REMINDER**** Every fire has the ability to be catastrophic. The wildland fire management environment has profoundly changed. Growing numbers of communities, across the nation, are experiencing longer fire seasons; more frequent, bigger, and more severe, fires are a real threat. Be careful with all campfires and equipment.

"I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts, and beer." --Abraham Lincoln
