HIGH WIND WARNING - EASTERN SIERRA SLOPES-WHITE MOUNTAINS

[EDIS] high wind warning remains in effect from 1 pm this afternoon to 11 am pdt friday for elevations about 5000 feet

EASTERN SIERRA SLOPES-WHITE MOUNTAINS OF INYO COUNTY-INCLUDING THE CITIES OF... ASPENDELL... MT WHITNEY

.A POWERFUL GULF OF ALASKA STORM WILL BRING STRONG WEST TO SOUTHWEST WINDS TO MUCH OF THE MOJAVE DESERT AND SOUTHERN GREAT BASIN TODAY AND FRIDAY. THE WINDS WILL SHIFT TO NORTHERLY OVER THE SOUTHERN GREAT BASIN FRIDAY AND OVER THE MOJAVE DESERT FRIDAY NIGHT...WITH BREEZY CONDITIONS EXPECTED ON SATURDAY. A HIGH WIND WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 1 PM THIS AFTERNOON TO WEST WINDS 45 TO 55 MPH WITH GUSTS TO NEAR 70 MPH WILL DEVELOP OVER THE EASTERN SIERRA SLOPES ABOVE 5000 FEET THIS AFTERNOON AND CONTINUE THROUGH EARLY FRIDAY. THE WINDS WILL DIMINISH LATE FRIDAY MORNING.

Instruction:
A HIGH WIND WARNING MEANS THAT A HAZARDOUS HIGH WIND EVENT IS EXPECTED OR OCCURRING. SUSTAINED WIND SPEEDS OF AT LEAST 50 MPH AND...OR GUSTS OF AT LEAST 70 MPH CAN LEAD TO PROPERTY DAMAGE.

How fires get their names

Every year in California thousands of wildfires start throughout the state. In most cases, the dispatch center sending the initial resources to a wildland fire will designate a name for the fire, but the first on scene engine or fire official can also name the incident. Fires are usually named for the area in which they start – a geographical location, local landmark, street, lake, mountain, peak, etc. Quickly naming the fire provides responding fire resources with an additional locater, and allows fire officials to track and prioritize incidents by name. For example during the Southern California Fire Siege of 2003, the largest wildland fire in California history, the Cedar Fire in San Diego County, was named after the Cedar Creek Falls area where it started. The destructive Old Fire, which burned during the same time period in San Bernardino County, was named after the road along which it started - Old Waterman Canyon Road.
