Update 0600: The King Fire is currently located in the canyon of the South Fork of the American River northeast of the community of Pollock Pines. Fire is currently traveling east/northeast with a rapid rate of spread. Poor overnight humidity recovery above 3,000' allowed the fire to remain active on ridges and upper plateaus. Down canyon winds pushed fire down drainage's.

Evacuations: Mandatory Evacuation Orders are in place for the following: Eastside of Forebay road from King of the Mountain Road to Pony Express Trail.
All roads north of Pony Express Trail from Forebay road east through Bullion Bend.

Yosemite Fire News and Notes: A new fire, Double Rock, was found September 16. It is approximately 7 miles east of White Wolf and near the source of Morrison Creek. This is a high elevation fire at approximately 8,750', smoldering in brush, down logs and snags and is estimated to be one acre in size. 

The Lembert and Cathedral fires in the Tuolumne Meadows area have become more active due to windy conditions at ridge tops and near the Sierra Nevada crest. Consequently, smoke has become more visible.

The Meadow Fire has been converted to a smaller Type 3 organization and will be monitored by wilderness fire modules.

Summary
Location: The Fire is located within the designated wilderness of the Yosemite National Park in Mariposa County and is currently within Little Yosemite Valley between Half Dome and Mount Starr King on both sides of the Merced River.
Notes:

• The fire spread significantly due to a wind event which occurred on September 7, 2014.
• In Yosemite National Park, fire managers operate within the federal guidelines to assess new naturally
• caused fires, long enough to determine the threat or benefit the fire may or may not have on the parks ecology. Most fires within the Yosemite National Park naturally burn themselves out. Only a small number of fires show potential for large fire growth and fire suppression action is needed to mitigate the threat to resources. Fire is an important component to the health of the parks sensitive ecology.
• Recreation and businesses remain open in the Yosemite National Park except trail areas listed below.

Fire Update
Firefighter and public safety remains the highest priority. Fire crews are being sensitive to environmental and cultural resources in and around the fire area.

Last night’s infrared flight indicates numerous isolated heat sources within the fires perimeter. Crews will continue to patrol and mop up hot spots near containment lines.

Air quality continues to increase as fuels are consumed.

Due to the extremely steep, rugged and inaccessible terrain, some fire crews will remain spiked in the wilderness to continue suppression and mop up efforts.

Fire crews were very successful with their efforts to utilize Minimum Impact Suppression Tactics (M.I.S.T). Fire crews utilized natural barriers such as, rock to rock, rock to domes, decomposed granite (DG) to sparse fuels to confine and contain the fire. Crews continue to work hard in maintaining natural habitat in the wilderness and are diligently working to limit the foot print the suppression effort may cause.

The South Central Interagency Incident Management Team transitioned the management of the fire back to the Yosemite National Park Type 3 Incident Management.

The trail to Half Dome via Little Yosemite Valley is open to day-use only. No overnight camping in any areas impacted by the fire is permitted.

The fire continues to effect popular hiking areas in Yosemite National Park and trail closures still remain in effect.

Smoke from the Meadows Fire could continue to impact visitors, campers and employees overnight and in the early morning hours in Yosemite Valley.

Fires can produce heavy smoke that blows down into Yosemite Valley. Be prepared for smoke in the unhealthy AQI range normally worse in the mornings with some clearing in the afternoon hours.

Meadow Fire Safety Closures Update

Containment of the Meadow Fire continues to grow allowing some areas to be re-opened. However, the fire is still active and fire crews are working in the area. In order to maintain the safety of park visitors and allow fire management operations to continue unimpeded, the Superintendent of Yosemite National Park is designating a portion of Yosemite Wilderness as closed. The area will be closed until further notice is given.

By order of the Superintendent of Yosemite National Park and under authority of Title 36, Code of Federal Regulations, Section 1.5(a) and Section (a)(1):




The area marked as closed on the accompanying map entitled Meadow Fire Safety Closure dated September 15, 2014.

The John Muir Trail between the Clouds Rest Junction and Sunrise HSC.
Sunrise and Merced Lake High Sierra Camps and backpackers’ camps.
The Sunrise Trail to Clouds Rest through to the John Muir Trail junction.

King Fire: CA-AEU King Fire
11, 570 acres, 5% contained.
The fire remained moderately active throughout the night. The winds reversed from up canyon to down canyon in the evening pushing the fire down through drainages.

Happy Camp Complex: CA-KNF Happy Camp Complex
113,158 acres, 55% contained.
 The Happy Camp Complex has merged with the Man Fire. The southern side of the fire continues to back into the wind while making occasional short surface fire runs.

 Man Fire continued to be active on the southwest and south flanks. The Man fire has merged with the Happy Camp Complex.

Update #7 - Release for Sunday, September 14, 2014/Time: 8:00 AM Last night’s operational briefing indicated an additional 30 percent containment of the fire. There are still a few isolated heat sources along the fires perimeter with most of the heat dispersed through the fires interior. Crews continue to patrol containment lines and address hot spots as needed. Isolated heat sources are scattered throughout the fire. Air quality continues to increase as fuels are consumed. Summary

 The Fire is located within the designated wilderness of the Yosemite National Park in Mariposa County and is currently within Little Yosemite Valley between Half Dome and Mount Starr King on both sides of the Merced River.

 The fire spread significantly due to a wind event which occurred on September 7, 2014.

 In Yosemite National Park, fire managers operate within the federal guidelines to assess new naturally caused fires, long enough to determine the threat or benefit the fire may or may not have on the parks ecology. Most fires within the Yosemite National Park naturally burn themselves out. Only a small number of fires show potential for large fire growth and fire suppression action is needed to mitigate the threat to resources. Fire is an important component to the health of the parks sensitive ecology.

 Recreation and businesses remain open in the Yosemite National Park except trail areas listed below.

Fire Update

 Firefighter and public safety remains the highest priority. Fire crews are being sensitive to environmental and cultural resources in and around the fire area.

 Last night’s operational briefing indicated an additional 30 percent containment of the fire. There are still a few isolated heat sources along the fires perimeter with most of the heat dispersed through the fires interior. Crews continue to patrol containment lines and address hot spots as needed. Isolated heat sources are scattered throughout the fire. Air quality continues to increase as fuels are consumed.

 Due to the extremely steep, rugged and inaccessible terrain, some fire crews are being flown into the area by helicopter. Air resources, including eight helicopters are being utilized along the fire-line to slow the forward progress of the fire and to cool down hot spots. Due to the potential fire growth and extensive amount of work which remains, a high commitment of resources will be required.

 Fire crews are using Minimum Impact Suppression Tactics (M.I.S.T). Fire crews are confining and containing the naturally caused fire by utilizing natural barriers such as, rock to rock, rock to domes, decomposed granite (DG) to sparse fuels. Crews are working hard to maintain natural habitat in the wilderness and working diligently to limit the foot print the suppression effort may cause.

 The South Central Interagency Incident Management Team is working with Yosemite National Park Fire Crews on transitioning the fire back to the park. Yosemite National Park will take over the fire on September 16 at 6:00 a.m. 

 The trail to Half Dome via Little Yosemite Valley is open to day-use only. No overnight camping in any areas impacted by the fire is permitted.

 The fire continues to burn through popular hiking areas in Yosemite National Park and trail closures still remain in effect.

 Smoke from the Meadows Fire will continue to impact visitors, campers and employees overnight and in the early morning hours in Yosemite Valley.

 Fires can produce heavy smoke that blows down into Yosemite Valley. Be prepared for smoke in the unhealthy AQI range normally worse in the mornings with some clearing in the afternoon hours.

ONCC - NORTH OPS 1800 09/14/2014

King Fire, CA-AEU King Fire, El Dorado National Forest.

2,500 acres, 10% contained. 

Critical rates of spread with long range spotting. Critical rate of spread with spotting 1/2 to 1 mile ahead of the fire. Fire has spotted and is established on the north side of the American River. 

Evacuations are in progress in Pollock Pines and Whites Meadows.  500 structures threatened. Mandatory evacuations in place for the Eastside of Forebay Road between King Mountain Road and Pony Express Trail; and for White Meadows Road. Fire is burning on both sides of the American River. Evacuation center is set up at Sierra Ridge Middle School.

111,942 acres, 55% contained.

 The fire will continue to slowly back to the west through the 2007 Elk and 2008 Panther fire scars.

Moderate fire activity with continued growth on the Man Fire. Primary growth was to the northwest however the west and southwest flanks continue to back slowly.
