Detective Sergeant Tommy Smith was accidentally shot and killed by another officer while conducting a probation check and warrant service at an apartment on Dougherty Road, in Dublin, at approximately 1:00 pm. The subject they were searching for was wanted for several robberies on BART property.
The officers conducting the check had made a force entry into the apartment when a round was discharged, striking Sergeant Smith. He was transported to Eden Medical Center where he succumbed to the wound.
The subject wanted in the initial search was not in the apartment at the time. However, he was taken into custody a short time later.
Sergeant Smith had served with the BART Police Department for 20 years. He is survived by his wife, who also serves with the department, and his 6-year-old daughter.

LAFD Pre-deploys Additional Resources for Wildfire Danger

As a result of the anticipated increased winds and lowering relative humidity, the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) will pre-deploy additional resources beginning at 8:00 AM on Tuesday, January 21, 2014. These additional firefighters will be placed at select Neighborhood Fire Stations serving high hazard brush areas for an anticipated 24 hours, pending re-evaluated weather conditions.

      These Fire Stations include:

28 (Porter Ranch) 

71 (Bel Air, Beverly Glen, UCLA Campus)

77 (Sun Valley, Shadow Hills, La Tuna Canyon)

83 (Encino) 

84 (Woodland Hills)

91 (Sylmar, N/E City of San Fernando)

97 (Laurel Canyon & Mulholland Drive)

99 (Beverly Glen and Mulholland Drive)

106 (West Hills, Chatsworth Lake, Canoga Park)

11 additional Fire Engines will be staffed. The specific stations and locations are based on fire experience, area access and fire potential.

When fire weather conditions dictate, the City of Los Angeles may enact special parking restrictions in areas historically prone to wildfire. These are critical areas (very narrow roads, hairpin turns, and key intersections) where parked vehicles could delay citizens trying to evacuate and delay fire companies attempting to gain access during a fast moving Brush Fire.

This local declaration of parking restrictions is separate from regional forecasts from our friends at the National Weather Service.

You Can Help!

While terrain is readily assessed, and many hazards are managed by our annual Brush Clearance Program, the LAFD asks you to remain cognizant of local fire weather.

Your personal awareness of overall wildfire danger, combined with readiness to take quick action are key to our collective survival of brush fires.

Some have asked, "What exactly is Ready! Set! Go!?" Here's a brief explanation. Those three words can prepare you and your family for a Wildfire:

Get Ready: Help protect your property by creating defensible space around your home. That means removing brush and replacing shake-shingle roofs. Assemble emergency supplies and plan your escape routes.

Get Set: If a wildfire threatens your neighborhood, act immediately. Place valuables in your vehicle, roll up the windows and back your vehicle into the driveway. Remove flammable materials from around your house.

Go: You don't have to wait to be told to leave, but if told to do so, do it. Remember firefighters need room in which to work. By leaving, you give them the best chance to protect your property.

Sac Metro Fire says 500 percent increase in fire calls so far this year #CaFire

SACRAMENTO- Sac Metro Fire says they’ve seen a 500 percent increase in fire calls so far this year, with an unusually dry start to 2014.

Rolling out on a call is a perfectly normal thing for firefighters around Sacramento.

But with conditions dry enough to be shrinking waterways throughout the area, they’re being called to respond five times more than usual to grass fires.

“Last year we had seven reported grass fires in the first 20 days [of the year]. This year up to 35,” Metro Fire Captain Jon Rudnicki said Monday.

Metro and other agencies are facing brush so deprived of moisture in what’s supposed to be the rainy season, that its water content is similar to what it would be after baking through August.

“This year, it’s really an all-around risk and people need to remember to maintain that clearance around their home to deep the debris away from their residence,” he said.

Even this late into January, Captain Rudnicki says one piece of debris around your house that you might night be thinking about is that Christmas tree that you haven’t sawed up or hauled off just yet.

No longer green, after not being watered in weeks, it could be the unfortunate fuel that helps your home go up in flames thanks to a stray spark.

Family, friends mourn fire engineer found unconscious at station

Members of Greg Hennessey’s crew performed CPR when the OCFA engineer was found in full cardiac arrest Monday, officials say. He was pronounced dead in Mission Hospital.

He was a volunteer firefighter in New York, but tried to leave the profession when his wife told him she was scared. He began working at JC Penney after the family moved to California.

It didn’t take long, however, before Hennessey realized what his calling was.

“He just wasn’t happy,” his wife, Deanna Hennessey, said Monday. “He got involved again, and within a year he was a firefighter again.”

For the next 24 years, he worked for the Orange County Fire Authority until his career, and life, suddenly ended Monday morning.

Hennessey was working a shift at OCFA station 45, 30131 Aventura, when he was found unconscious by his crew at 9:40 a.m., Capt. Steve Concialdi said. Members of the crew performed CPR and then transported him to Mission Hospital.

He was pronounced dead at 10:20 a.m. He was 49.

Hennessey was found unconscious in his fire station, OCFA station 45, Monday morning, according to officials. He was transported to declared dead at Mission Hospital a short time later.

“Today we lost a valuable family member,” Fire Chief Keith Richter said. “Greg was a respected engineer and indispensable mentor to the young lives that he helped.”

Ten firefighters were at the station at the time.

Hennessey was an apparatus engineer, driving the fire truck in Rancho Santa Margarita. He also worked as an advisor for fire explorers in Rancho Santa Margarita and Mission Viejo, mentoring teenagers who were thinking about a career as a firefighter, OCFA spokeswoman Lynette Round said.

“He wasn’t one to garner a lot of attention, he was really behind the scenes,” she said.

He worked as a mentor for aspiring firefighters for the last eight years, Concialdi said, and also taught in the apparatus engineer academy.

“That was a passion of his,” he said. “He was committed to teaching new firefighters.”

Hennessey began his career with OCFA in 1990, where he worked as a firefighter for 11 years.

In 2001, he was promoted to engineer.
“He was probably one of the most conscientious firefighters I’ve ever met, very, very excellent and competent at his job, well-liked by the firefighters, really a leader among firefighters in the OCFA,” said OCFA Division Chief Greg McKeown, who attended the fire academy in Rancho Santa Margarita with Hennessey in 1990.

“It’s definitely a blow to all of us because it was very unexpected,” he said.
At his Trabuco Canyon home, Hennessey is remembered as a caring father and a neighbor.
Donna Dipietrantonio, who lives across from the Hennesseys on High Country Drive, said the family supported her when she lost her husband.

“(Greg Hennessey) always kept an eye when I wasn’t home,” Dipietrantonio said. “He and his family invited me to their Christmas, Thanksgiving and birthday parties, whenever there were celebratory occasions. He was a really good friend, always willing to help me.”
Deanna Hennessey said her husband always wished to be remembered as a “simple man,” who treasured basic things in life and lived for his family.

“I’m just numb right now,” she said. “It’s hard.”
Greg Hennessey is survived by his wife and sons Ryan, 22, and Brandon, 19, according to the statement.
Hennessey, as well as his two sons, were Eagle Scouts, Concialdi said.
“We are assisting the Hennessey family during this difficult time, and appreciate the support from those around us,” Richter said in the statement.
OCFA Officials said information about funeral services will be announced when they become available.

The redesigned Sit/209 program is on track to be deployed in the

Fire and Aviation Management Web Applications system

(FAMWEB) on January 20, 2014 approximately 0900 PST.

What this means for dispatch offices and ongoing large incidents

is the legacy Sit/209 (Old 209) database program will be deactivated and the new program will go live.

Those dispatch offices that are currently experiencing fire activity

should coordinate the transition from the legacy program to the new program with their Geographic Area Intelligence Coordinator.

Large incidents that are submitting ICS-209 reports at the time of the transition to the new program will merely switch to the new 209 program.

It is recommended that you print a copy of the last 209 entered.

It will be useful for active incidents that have been submitting

209 reports. Incidents will be manually updated in the new program.

CAL FIRE has issued a SRA Burn Suspension effective midnight tonight.  This is very rare for the winter and normally occurs during the peak of summer, however this is reflective of the drought, dry fuel conditions, and weather.

A Burn Suspension "only" applies to residential burn piles, dooryard burning, etc.  Agriculture (vineyards) and timber operations are still allowed to proceed but REQUIRE a CAL FIRE LE-5 Burn Permit. Campfires, ceremonial fires, etc. are also exempt and do not need a LE-5. 

CAL FIRE personnel will conduct a site visit as part of issuing LE-5s to discuss fire safety, how to acquire burn day status, and whom to notify when initiating burning.  We will emphasis that no burning shall occur when it is windy regardless of the burn day status and they are responsible if the fire escapes.  All air quality regulations are still required to be followed in addition to the LE-5 requirements.

LAFD Early Morning Residential Fire Claims Mans Life #CaFire #LAFire

WINNETKA - A fire in a detached garage in Winnetka claims the life of a 61 year-old man.

Los Angeles firefighters received multiple 9-1-1 calls just after 4:00 AM on January 20, 2014 for a structure fire at 7971 Sunnybrae Avenue. They arrived on scene to find the garage of a one-story home well involved in flames.

Firefighters forced entry and mounted a bold interior offense with hose lines, and cut holes with chainsaws on the roof to allow the thick smoke, heat and gases to escape, greatly improving visibility inside. During a systematic search of the charred garage, sadly an adult male was found beyond medical help and was determined dead.

Due to a well coordinated and aggressive attack, over 30 firefighters under the command of Battalion Chief Kevin Pearson, fully extinguished the fire in just 17 minutes and stopped the blaze from entering the home where an elderly couple were fast asleep.

In examining the fire's aftermath, there was no immediate evidence of a functional smoke alarm within the garage. There was one door as an exit and excessive storage inside. No security door or window bars were present to impede egress. The garage was not equipped with residential fire sprinklers. Determination if the garage was used as a sleeping quarters is under investigation. The City's Department of Building and Safety was notified.

The fire cause is under active investigation by skilled LAFD Arson Investigators. The monetary loss is estimated at $30,000 ($20,000 structure and $10,000 contents). Firefighters saved approximately $400,000 dollars and possibly two lives.

Fire is burning in the Golden Trout Wilderness in Sequoia National Forest,
Firefighters have been instructed on special tactics to reduce their impact on the environment while keeping safety as their number one priority. Firefighters were shuttled out of the fire by helicopter.
Update 3-22-14 0800: Fire did not grow significantly overnight.  With continued drought conditions, and concern for lingering smoke in nearby communities, fire officials have decided to insert firefighters on the fireline and stop it from spreading any further.

 Over the weekend, firefighters will be flown into the wilderness on a helicopter to begin suppressing the Soda Fire.  

They will utilize the helicopter for water drops on the hottest parts of the fire.  The priority is firefighter safety; they will be flown out at night. 

 Efforts will be made to protect the wilderness quality of the area. Fire crews have been instructed on special tactics to reduce their impact on the environment while keeping safety as their number one priority.

Update 1-27-14 0800: 1132 acres and is 0% contained 

Update 1-22-14 0800: 676 acres and is 0% contained. Monitored fire by air.  Completed mapping and Recon missions.  Fire growth was only 8 acres last operational period.

Minimal fire behavior was observed most of the growth was concentrated to the west flank of the fire.  

Update 1-20-14 1800: 668 acres and is 0% contained. All fire is contained to the ground in the understory Continue to monitor the fire by air.

Update 1-19-14 1800: 668 acres and is 0% contained. All fire is contained to the ground in the understory Continue to monitor the fire by air.

Update 1-19-14 0800: 515 acres and is 0% contained. Aircraft was able to land and insert a Fire Investigator today. hand-crews cutting access trail.

Update 1-18-14 1800: Start date 1/14 515 acres. 0% contained.

Fire is surrounded by snow banks.

Update 1-16-14 0800: Approx. 180 acres. Still monitor only status at this time due to inability to safely insert firefighters. The fire grew at a slow to moderate rate in the understory.
Update 1-15-14 0800: 10 acres

Location: Golden Trout Wilderness. 6,600’ level FRA

Cause: Under investigation.
