If you were anywhere near Camp Pendleton today, you couldn't help but notice the smoky conditions as firefighters spent the better part of the afternoon working a brush fire in the San Mateo area.

Although a large number of Marines are training in the area this week, they were evacuated promptly.

The terrain called for fighting fire with fire on this particular incident; final acreage is estimated at 490. No one was injured and no loss of property occurred.

2-Alarm Fire Burns At Milpitas Jail

MILPITAS (CBS SF) - The Milpitas and San Jose fire departments responded to a two-alarm fire at Santa Clara County’s Elmwood Correctional Facility late Wednesday morning, a fire battalion chief said.

Firefighters were dispatched to the jail, located at 701 S. Abel St. in Milpitas, at 11:46 a.m., Milpitas Battalion Chief Rick Frawley said.

The fire burned in the jail’s support services building, which houses a kitchen, laundry facility and warehouse, Santa Clara County sheriff’s spokesman Deputy Kurtis Stenderup said.

All visitation programs at the facility were canceled Wednesday, and as of 2 p.m., the jail remained on lockdown, Stenderup said.

The fire does not appear to be suspicious, he said.

The blaze was contained by noon and fire officials cleared the scene shortly after 2 p.m., Frawley said.

It started in the building’s HVAC mechanical roof system on the third floor, and the first and second floors sustained water damage, Frawley said.

“The structure still appears to be in good shape,” Stenderup said.

The jail is a men’s and women’s facility, according to the Santa Clara County Department of Corrections’ website.

The fire is being investigated by the Milpitas Fire Department in cooperation with the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office, Frawley said.

Modesto and Salida fire officials confront a bleak financial picture, and perhaps introduce a new fire chief #CaFire

Modesto, Salida joint fire agency faces major decisions

Modesto and Salida fire officials will confront a bleak financial picture, and perhaps introduce a new fire chief, at today's Modesto Regional Fire Authority board meeting.

The agency must close a $1.8 million gap while adopting a budget for the fiscal year starting next week. Options include layoffs and periodically closing some stations.

Source: http://www.modbee.com/2013/06/25/2779887/modesto-salida-joint-fire-agency.html

Financial problems have been linked to Modesto City Hall, which could pursue a sales tax increase on the November ballot.
The fire board selected a chief more than two weeks ago but delayed an announcement pending a background check.
The board meets at 1:30 p.m. at 3705 Oakdale Road, Modesto.

CAL FIRE law enforcement officers Tuesday night arrested a Yosemite Lakes Park couple on suspicion of dozens of arson fires.

Madera - After a rash of suspicious fires, CAL FIRE law enforcement officers Tuesday night arrested a Yosemite Lakes Park couple on suspicion of dozens of arson fires. Kenneth Alan Jackson, 40 and Allison Marie Waterman, 46, both of Coarsegold, were booked into the Madera County Jail for arson. Jackson is being charged with 31 counts of arson, resisting arrest, as well as attempted battery on a peace officer. Waterman was booked on a single charge of arson.

“The Yosemite Lakes Park community has been threatened by countless wildfires over the past several months that we believe were a result of arson,” said Chief Nancy Koerperich, CAL FIRE Unit Chief for the Madera-Mariposa-Merced Unit. “We appreciate the community’s support and assistance as we worked to track down these suspects.”

CAL FIRE law enforcement officers work diligently in arson cases to aggressively investigate and prosecute those suspected of intentionally starting fires. Numerous agencies assisted in the investigation and arrest including the Madera County Sheriff’s Department, Madera County District Attorney’s Office and the Yosemite Lakes Park security staff.

As fire danger remains extreme across California, arson is a major threat to both life and property. Residents should be vigilant in their preparedness and aware of suspicious persons when a fire does start. If you witness someone suspicious make note of the time, his or her physical description, as well as any vehicle description, including the license plate number. Always contact law enforcement, never approach a suspicious person. Anyone with information about arson is urged to contact the CAL FIRE Arson Hotline at 1-800-468-4408. Callers can remain anonymous.

Yosemite Lakes Park is a community of approximately 1,900 homes in Madera County located between Yosemite National Park and Fresno, near the town of Coarsegold.

The CAL FIRE San Bernardino Unit wants to remind everyone to be extra careful during this coming period of hot weather. Wildland fire ignition potential will be greatly increased with the heat. Fireworks, illegal and Safe and Sane can quickly be the cause of fires if used improperly or in the wrong place. Please be fire safe and fire wise.

CAL FIRE SCU Crew Discovers Mans Body In Truck After Following Skid Marks Off Road.

Man Who Died When Pickup Truck Plunged Off Hwy 9 Near Los Gatos ID'd

Santa Clara County medical examiner's says victim is 29-year-old Boulder Creek resident David Martinez.
Posted by Melissa Phy - Los gatos patch
A man whose body was found inside a crashed pickup truck off of state Highway 9 in the Santa Cruz Mountains on Monday was identified by the Santa Clara County medical examiner's office today as 29-year-old Boulder Creek resident David Martinez.

Martinez was driving south on the highway north of Heather Heights Road on the western edge of Santa Clara County when his truck went off the western edge of the roadway, California Highway Patrol spokesman Chris Falkowski said.

His body found at about 9:15 a.m. Monday, but it is unclear when the crash happened, as no witnesses have come forward.

Falkowski said it appears Martinez failed to negotiate a curve in the roadway and his 1998 Chevrolet Silverado pickup went off the pavement and tumbled 125 feet down a hillside, landing upside-down in a ravine.

The crash was discovered by Cal Fire employees on Monday morning after they noticed fresh skid marks leading off the roadway as they were responding to an unrelated incident, Falkowski said.

Firefighters went down the hillside and found the pickup truck with the man inside. The accident location at the intersection of highways 9 and 35 is about 13 miles away from downtown Los Gatos.

Cal Fire teamed up with Santa Clara County firefighters to use ropes to rappel down the slope to reach the man's body and recover it, Falkowski said.

Martinez's body was taken to the medical examiner's office, which has yet to release the results of an autopsy, an office spokeswoman said.

****REMINDER**** Every fire has the ability to be catastrophic. The wildland fire management environment has profoundly changed. Growing numbers of communities, across the nation, are experiencing longer fire seasons; more frequent, bigger, and more severe, fires are a real threat. Be careful with all campfires and equipment.
