LACoFD: Great puppy save - Trapped 24 ft. feet down

Puppy rescued from well in Gorman; firefighters complete the operation unharmed

Crews that rescued a puppy trapped in a well in Gorman said today that the dog did not try to bite anyone as it was carried to safety.
Unlike the German shepherd that bit a firefighter who fished it out of the Los Angeles River last week in pouring rain, the puppy in Gorman was cooperative Sunday and patiently waited for a team of about a dozen firefighters to set it free, said Inspector Frederic Stowers of the L.A. County Fire Department.
“The hole the dog was trapped in was about 3- by 5-feet wide and about 24 feet deep,” Stowers said. “The dog was in good condition after being rescued and has been turned over to animal control.”
Authorities do not know exactly when or how the dog fell into the hole at North 300 Street and West Aqueduct Service Road. When rescuers arrived about 2:15 p.m. Sunday, the animal did not appear to be under distress, Stowers said.
A 24-foot-long ground ladder was used to reach into the well to retrieve the dog. Television news footage showed the puppy licking the firefighter on the face and arm as he was being placed in a duffle bag to be carried away.
So far, no one has come forward to claim the puppy, Stowers said.

SAR: Woman, 77, missing in the Point Reyes National Seashore

Woman, 77, missing at Pt. Reyes

POINT REYES NATIONAL SEASHORE, Calif. — Authorities are looking for a 77-year-old woman who has gone missing in the Point Reyes National Seashore.
Marin County sheriff's officials say Silvia Lang of Nicasio was last seen Saturday night.
Her car was found in a beach parking lot the next afternoon with two of her dogs inside. A third dog was nearby with its leash hung up on some rocks.
Search and rescue teams combed the area through the night, but still haven't found the woman.
Friends say Lang is an experienced hiker who used to work for the National Park Service and trains dogs for the disabled.
Two weeks ago, 37-year-old Katherine Truitt of Alameda went missing around McClures Beach, eight miles to the north of where Lang's car was found. Truitt hasn't been found.

Dog killing firefighter trial goes to jury today - Please write to the judge

The Trial of Glynn Johnson should conclude on Monday, January 25, and be given to the jury.  Friday the defense objected to the testimony of 4 firefighters who were planning to testify against Johnson for the prosecution, They were not allowed to testify.  The case is very clear and we are all hoping that the jury will do the right thing and convict Glynn Johnson of felony animal abuse with a maximum sentence of 4 years in prison.

If he is convicted the judge will determine the sentence.  There is speculation that even if convicted Johnson may get only probation.  Some of the reasons that may be used in sentencing are that he is a "respected firefighter" and that it is his first conviction.  I have been told by the prosecutor that it may help to get a tougher sentence if the judge receives letters encouraging a tough sentence and the reasons why he should receive the harsh sentence. Please send a letter to the judge advocating a tough sentence and hope that any of you who have had dealings with Glynn and know his character and despicable behavior will do the same.

Letters should be addressed to Judge J. Thompson Hanks and sent in care of Assistant District Attorney Will Robinson.  The address is The District Attorney's Office, 4075 Main Street, Riverside, CA 92501.

It may also help if you refer to the case of the People vs. Glynn Damon Johnson.

Also there are shirts available to support the cause at www.lacofd.bigcartel.com.
Ed Wilson was kind enough to make the "Firefighters Against Animal Abuse" shirts and is donating his time and the shirts at cost.  They are $12 of which $7 will go to the fund established to help with any legal fees for the Toole family regarding this case.  The remainder, if any, will go to an animal support group.  The shirts garnered considerable attention at and around the courthouse.  They were mentioned in at least one newspaper, and many supporters, including people working in the courts and people not attending Glynn's trial, noticed and wanted shirts.

LAFD ALERT: Dog rescue - Firefighter hospitalized with severe arm & hand injuries.

Part-time hero & full time LAFD firefighter, Joe St. Georges makes a compassionate save!
Get well soon Joe!

Amazing video: A German shepherd hoisted to safety from the storm-swollen Los Angeles river Friday is fine, the firefighter is severely injured

.
A German shepherd hoisted to safety from the storm-swollen Los Angeles river Friday is fine, authorities said, but the firefighter who splashed down in the daring helicopter rescue was hospitalized after being bitten by the dog.
Los Angeles fire officials said 50-year-old Joe St. Georges, who suffered severe hand and arm injuries, had been taken to County USC Medical Center.
“He has significant injuries, bites and punctures, to his hand and arm and is being seen by a specialist,” Los Angeles fire Capt. Steve Ruda said.
The dog, nicknamed Vernon after the Southern California town where he was found, did not have a name tag or computer chip, said Sgt. Charles Miller of the Southeast Area Animal Control Authority in Downey.
The dog was quarantined to be monitored for rabies, but “appears to be well-maintained and cared for,” Miller said.
At least 50 firefighters responded to reports that the dog was in the river. For an hour, firefighters stood at the top of the steep, concrete banks, throwing life vest and float rings, hoping the dog would grab on. Most of the time, the canine walked along a pipe or ledge in the center of the river, sometimes slipping. One firefighter got into the river and tried to catch, but the dog took off. Soon the pipe was submerged.
When the helicopter hovered overhead, the dog scrambled to the side of the river and tried to climb the slippery sides, only to slip each time.
St. Georges finally splashed down from the helicopter, wrestled with the frightened canine and lifted it to safety, using the dog’s collar and a rope to hoist him up. Despite St. George’s injuries, he didn’t fail the dog.
Miller said the dog had some scrapes and worn nails, but was otherwise fine.
“He was fearful when he first got here, understandably. He went through a big ordeal,” Miller said.
The dog will be quarantined for 10 days, unless the owner shows up with proof of rabies vaccination, Miller said. Then, the dog could be monitored at home. If the owner doesn’t show up, officials will try to find the dog a new home.
Storms that started Monday have already dropped up to 8 inches of rain in Los Angeles County, the National Weather Service reported.

****REMINDER**** Every fire has the ability to be catastrophic. The wildland fire management environment has profoundly changed. Growing numbers of communities, across the nation, are experiencing longer fire seasons; more frequent, bigger, and more severe, fires are a real threat. Be careful with all campfires and equipment.

"I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts, and beer." --Abraham Lincoln
