School may not be in session for the coming weeks, but today CAL FIRE Riverside County and Corona City firefighters made good use of the El Cerrito Middle School’s multi-purpose room.

For the second year in a row, John White, founder of the "Bicycles for Children" organization, and his team have been raising funds year round to purchase bicycles and helmets at a reduced cost.

The firefighters, along with over 100 local volunteers consisting of residents and business owners, dedicated their time to building nearly 600 bicycles that will become Christmas gifts to local youths.

Bicycles for Children is a non-profit program dedicated to donating new bicycles to needy and deserving children in the Corona/Norco/Eastvale areas.
According to Assistant Coordinator Autumn Hildebrand, the organization works with local school officials to identify and screen children who are eligible to receive a bicycle and helmet for Christmas.

“Witnessing our firefighters and community members donate their time and effort to making kid’s holidays a little brighter is very heartwarming,” said CAL FIRE Riverside County Battalion Chief Silvio Lanzas.

****REMINDER**** Every fire has the ability to be catastrophic. The wildland fire management environment has profoundly changed. Growing numbers of communities, across the nation, are experiencing longer fire seasons; more frequent, bigger, and more severe, fires are a real threat. Be careful with all campfires and equipment.

"I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts, and beer." --Abraham Lincoln
