Natural Gas Leak - Golden Hill at Dallons Road

On Thursday, December 4, 2008 at 10:00 a.m., two companies of Paso Robles Firefighters and one Battalion Chief responded to a ruptured four (4) inch natural gas line at the construction site at Golden Hills and Dallons Road in Paso Robles.

Firefighters arrived at the scene and determined that a grader had struck the buried natural gas line resulting in a significant natural gas leak in the area of Golden Hills and Tractor Way. Firefighters, assisted by officers from the Paso Robles Police Department, quickly established an exclusion zone around the leak and rerouted traffic to a safer route around the incident. Additionally, Nanometer Technologies located at 2501 Golden Hills Road was evacuated because it was located inside the exclusion area.

The natural gas leak was successfully terminated by Southern California Gas Company at approximately 11:10 a.m. All streets and businesses were immediately reopened.

No firefighter or civilian injuries were reported.

A total of eight (8) firefighters from the Paso Robles Department of Emergency Services responded to the incident. Paso Robles Police Department units assisted with traffic control.

How fires get their names

Every year in California thousands of wildfires start throughout the state. In most cases, the dispatch center sending the initial resources to a wildland fire will designate a name for the fire, but the first on scene engine or fire official can also name the incident. Fires are usually named for the area in which they start – a geographical location, local landmark, street, lake, mountain, peak, etc. Quickly naming the fire provides responding fire resources with an additional locater, and allows fire officials to track and prioritize incidents by name. For example during the Southern California Fire Siege of 2003, the largest wildland fire in California history, the Cedar Fire in San Diego County, was named after the Cedar Creek Falls area where it started. The destructive Old Fire, which burned during the same time period in San Bernardino County, was named after the road along which it started - Old Waterman Canyon Road.
