News: Former Cal Fire volunteer firefighter arrested

Former volunteer firefighter arrested

Riverside County Sheriff's Department arrested a former volunteer firefighter March 10 on numerous felony accounts of embezzlement, forgery and identity theft.

Ernie Mungarro, 34, of Beaumont was formerly assigned as a volunteer firefighter to the Calimesa City Station # 21 from March 2001 through April 2006, according to a news release from Cal Fire.

Several months after Mungarro left the fire department, the president of the volunteer company asked the department to review financial documents.

The review identified significant inconsistencies and confirmed funds had been misappropriated.

"I want everyone to know we have zero tolerance for anyone who violates the public's trust and we will hold all of our employees accountable for their actions," Riverside County Fire Chief John R. Hawkins said.

****REMINDER**** Every fire has the ability to be catastrophic. The wildland fire management environment has profoundly changed. Growing numbers of communities, across the nation, are experiencing longer fire seasons; more frequent, bigger, and more severe, fires are a real threat. Be careful with all campfires and equipment.

"I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts, and beer." --Abraham Lincoln
